Hoarders SOS

Oriental silk rug

A few months ago Fringes of Plymouth were contacted by Channel 4 to do a valuation on a rug that was found whilst filming an episode of Hoarders SOS. We were told to keep this under wraps until the episode was released. We’ve just been itching to tell everyone!

So what is Hoarders SOS?

Oriental silk rug“In this brand new series, experts Curtis Dowling, Joanna Riley and Marianne Cammack help two households drowning in clutter to clear out and make some money” (quote from Channel 4 website)

Fringes of Plymouth appear in Episode 12 upon the discovery of a unique rug that they knew absolutely nothing about. But that’s where our expertise come into play. Curtis Dowling brought the rug into our showroom where Andy Reeves, our resident oriental rug specialist gave  some insight into what it was that made this rug so unique.

A beautiful hand made oriental silk rug that we just couldn’t resist but to make an offer on. The rug can now be found in our showroom, almost as a reminder “of that time we were on TV”.

Fringes of Plymouth Revamp

After the revamp

For years, Fringes of Plymouth has always had the same look. Workshop tucked in at the back, whilst the showroom was laid out as best as possible with the space available. Though not the best looking showroom in the world, it was at least practical. After spending a few hours clearing out some old stock, Tony decided that actually, the showroom could be given a more practical layout that would also look better than ever.

The start…

Showroom before revamAs you can see from the picture on the right, it was all a little cramped. There was enough room to walk around and look at the rugs, but it just wasn’t enough space. You couldn’t roll a big rug out and take in the size of the rug, or the designs, there simply wasn’t the space.

Then there was the walkway into the Oriental section of the showroom. If you look right down the middle of the image on the right, you can see that there was around a metre of space to walk through.

All in all, though it was practical enough for the purpose, it just wasn’t quite good enough. So, what did we do? We set about taking it all apart.

The seemingly endless task…

When we first started, we estimated around a week for everything to be back to a state whereby we could serve customers, show them rugs and be back in full swing. How wrong we were! First of all, we had to move the workshop bench into it’s new home. This meant taking down the rugs and stands in the oriental section and disassembling most of the workshop. With the bench moved, the shelves and the yarns were relocated along with the binding collection rack.

The finish line!

Now here we are, all finished and able to bask in the glory of our achievement. We’d taken Fringes of Plymouth to a whole new level. From a previously dark and cramped showroom to a gloriously light and spacious open plan showroom with a view of the workshop. As you can see from the picture, it looks much much better.

Stop rugs from slipping

So you’re finally fed up, you want to stop rugs from slipping all over the place. After a while it can become endearing. That door mat is no longer by the door, it’s like it has a mind of it’s own. But don’t worry, we have a solution to stop rugs from slipping… Check out the video below if you don’t believe it!

How to stop rugs from slippingI bet you’re excited now, aren’t you? But alas, you’ve already bought plenty of different “solutions” to stop them from moving. I guess they didn’t work. You wouldn’t be reading up on how to stop rugs from slipping otherwise, would you? We have the answer for you.

No fancy sales gimmicks here. If it doesn’t work, bring it back and get your money back. That’s how much faith we have in this product. Guess how many people have brought it back to us? You’d be wrong. Thus far, zero. Nil. Nobody has brought it back to date – touch wood.

So how does it work?

First of all, we cut the rug antislip to a size that covers the majority of your mat. It simply will not work if you want to put a strip at each end or around the border. The parts that are covered will stay where they are, but the section that isn’t covered will “ruck up” and eventually damage your mat. Therefore, we highly recommend that the majority of the mat is well covered. Take for example a mat 30″ long x 18″ wide, we would recommend for 27″ x 15″ of the area to be covered. We will happily cut it to your size if it helps.

Peel off the protective plastic layer. This is crucial – your rug will slip if you don’t remove the plastic.

If you want to stop rugs from slipping on your smooth floor, lie the rug antislip black side up and place the rug on top. Don’t worry it works on carpet too. Instead of the black side up, it goes grey side up.

That’s it. It really is that simple.

New look Fringes of Plymouth

After

As many of you may have noticed recently, our building has been undergoing some maintenance work. We have had calls from a lot of our customers worrying that we’re closing down. This is simply not the case.

The exterior of the building was looking dated and the paint was becoming tatty and, quite frankly, an eyesore. So the only way forward was to give the whole exterior a facelift. (Before and after pictures at the bottom)

What have we had done then?

We had the whole of the building jet washed to remove old and bedded in dirt. This straight away made us realise just how much dirt over time can make the magnolia paint look old and tired. It was then onto the cladding. All of the red cladding had to be removed to make way for the new.

But first, a lick of paint. A nice modern grey was the chosen colour. You could watch the building become more modernised with every stroke of the brush. The painting was a slow process to make sure that every nook and cranny had been covered.

Now that the paint had been finished and left to harden for a couple of days, it was time to replace the old red cladding with new blue cladding. This process really transformed the building. The blue and grey combination works well to bring the exterior of the building up to date.

Once the cladding had been completed it was time to put up the signs. The blue writing matches perfect with the blue cladding, whilst the white background makes the blue writing stand out. The perfect contrast.

We couldn’t stop at just the signs on the cladding though. Each member of staff was given a sheet of paper to design their own window signs. The best ideas from each design were put together and sent to print. Within a few hours the windows were sign written.

A much more professional look for a professional business. What do you think?

Custom Car Mats – Vauxhall Corsa

This week we made a set of custom car mats to fit a Vauxhall Corsa. A very unique Vauxhall Corsa. Brad – the owner – has spent a lot of time and money to create a car that reflects his personality. An outgoing guy that has a passion for the creative. Having grown tiresome of the original mats that had become worn and horrible, it was time for a refresh.

Brad had heard through a friend that we make custom car mats in our workshop. We discussed with Brad about what would suit his requirements best. The more vibrant, colourful and unique, the better. We had just the thing! For someone who is a car fanatic, we concluded that the best carpet for Brad would be road map carpet. As ideas go, this was certainly a first for us, and we hope it won’t be the last.

He brought his original mats into us and we set about using them as a template. Because of the pattern of the road map, the custom made car mats had to fit the pattern in the best possible way to make the most of the design. So with this in mind we carefully located the original mats onto the carpet and cut them to the exact size.

A simple, subtle binding was never on the cards with Brad’s custom car mats. He gave us free reign to choose whatever colour we liked – for each mat. For once we could let our hair down and really go nuts on the binding colour. After all, it’s not every day that we get to switch up the colours when we’re doing the binding.

And the outcome? Take a look at the pictures below.

Replacement Delfin Motorhome Carpets

Kitchen - After

This week we had a beautiful Delfin Performance T821 in for some replacement motorhome carpets. The customer had been in previously to enquire about changing the carpets and was surprised just how easy the process really is. After some deliberation, he had finally chosen the perfect replacement motorhome carpets, a quality carpet called “Rustique” was chosen. All that was left to do was book it in to get them made to size.

Burstner Delfin Motorhome Replacement CarpetsA week later and into our car park comes a glorious looking machine! Our experienced carpet fitter did an excellent job of cutting the replacement motorhome carpets to the exact shape. In the cabin, cutting around the seats, the handbrake and other little intracacies. Whilst in the back there was a fitted table and eating area to manouver around. But our fitter made this look like a doddle.

Once it was all cut to size, our machinist, Josie, then set about whipping the edges. With complicated shapes it can take a while to get them through the machine. With a few cuss words and a lot of expert jiggery, Josie managed to get all of the edges whipped in a colour that suited the carpets perfectly. Any offcuts of the replacement motorhome carpets were then squared up and used as loose laid mats. Though it may have taken a little while to do, the outcome was definitely worth the wait.

Below are a few pictures that the customer allowed us to take of the replacement motorhome carpets all in and looking like perfection.

Goodbye, Afghan Belouch

Afghan Belouch

Sometimes we come across an oriental rug that we just can’t say no to. This was the case with this Afghan Belouch that quickly sold from our showroom. At Quality Oriental Rugs, we love oriental rugs and all that they stand for. The fact that the way they’re made makes each one unique. But this one is unique for a completely different reason.

Afghan BelouchAs you can see from the design, this truly is a one off design that you’re probably unlikely to see ever again. As much as we’re happy that the customer found such a beautiful rug at such a bargain price, it’s one that we’re certainly sad to see go! This rug has always sought attention from all of the customers that have seen it. Unfortunately, this rug isn’t for everyone’s decor, but they could see the beauty behind the rug.

Below are a few details about the rug and what makes it so unique.

Afghan Belouch

We’re sure the person that made this rug was very proud to have produced such a wonderful piece. The impeccable detail of this Afghan Belouch will never go unnoticed as focal point in a room.

Who knows what we will see next! We wish the customer all the best with their new rug and hope to see them again soon.
